Marriage equality has won in the USA

From the ruling by the Supreme Court of the United States, 26 June 2015

Today the Supreme Court of the United States ruled in the case of Obergefell v. Hodges that all states must issue and recognize marriage licenses to same-sex couples on an equal basis as opposite-sex couples. This comes as a double victory for American progressive forces with the ruling only yesterday that the insurance subsidies of the Affordable Care Act will be retained in full. As of today, all citizens of the USA have the right to enter into a marriage contract with someone of the same sex.

The ruling has been met with both celebratory jubilance from the left and center, the vast majority, of the American people, as well as seathing contempt from the ever more diminishing right. As the right desperately attempts cling to the remaining vestiges of its institutional legitimacy, those closer to the center are beginning to come to terms with the fact that they can no longer pander to irrational fears and paranoia and expect to win over the majority of the public's favor.

The far-right, now fully deflated from its Tea Party blowout five years ago, is in its death throws. Just as an injured animal is more prone to attack, the far-right resorts to violent rhetoric and reactionary extremism in order to keep itself alive among its base of bitter racists and sociopaths which is now facing extinction.

Unfortunately for Texans, the state remains under the control of the far-right. Hours after the announcement on the Supreme Court ruling, Governor Greg Abbott announced that he no longer recognizes the legitimacy of the Supreme Court, claiming that it has become an unelected legislature. He insisted that the state will continue to protect 'religious liberties' of citizens, despite the ruling have little to no relevance to an individual's freedom of conscience. He issued an instruction that all state agencies withold all benefits to employees in a same-sex marriage.

From the looks of things, Greg Abbott intends to waste endless amounts of public funds to fight out a no-possible-win court battle against the federal government just as he did as Attourney Generalin his crusade against the Affordable Care Act.

As of now, local jurisdictions have begun issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Though we still have some obstacles going forward, the battle is down-hill from here on out, and that is cause for celebration.
